India played three spinners in the ODIs against South Africa in the form of R. Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Jayant Yadav. Ashwin made a comeback in the white-ball format in the 2021 T20 World cup after being neglected from the format in 2017. He, however, wasn’t able to impact much in the ODI series against SA. Ashwin picked up 1 wicket from the first two ODIs and was rested for the third one. It has also to be noted that the pitches were far from spin-friendly (as expected) conditions in the ODI series.
Speaking to Sports Tak, Harbhajan Singh believes that the lack of spin potent from the Indian spinners gave the freedom to South African batsmen to score freely.
“R. Ashwin has plenty of variations but they weren’t visible in the ODI series. I believe that Ashwin will be left out from the ODI set up once Washington Sundar is available because he also has batting ability”. said Harbhajan.
The right-arm off-spinner from Tamil Nadu was unable to fly for the SA series due to being Covid positive. In the first ODI, Temba Bavuma and Rassie Van Der Dussen ran with centuries with little to no trouble from the Indian spinners. The second ODI was a familiar story too and the spinners weren’t able to restrict the SA batters except for Bumrah’s economical spell. Jayant Yadav, Chahal, and Shreyas Iyer went for 121 runs and took just one wicket of Janneman Malan in the third ODI.
