Captaincy is just an honor, aim should always to score runs : Gautam Gambhir on Kohli’s captaincy resgination

India will take on the West Indies from the 6th of February. The home series will allow the Indian team to regroup under their new captain after a disastrous tour of South Africa where they were expected to conquer the final frontier.

While Virat Kohli stepped away from the T20 captaincy, he was annexed from the ODI captaincy and he relinquished the test captaincy also after the SA series loss. It would be interesting to see Virat playing as a player after so many years of captaining the side when he was always in the face of the opposition.

Speaking to Sports Today, Gautam Gambhir was asked how should Kohli go about his business now that he is no longer the captain, to which replied “Nothing changes. When you are growing up as a kid, you wanna try and win games for your country and that is all that matters. You don’t dream of captaining the side from day 1, you got to score as many runs as possible and try and win a game of cricket. Captaincy is just an honor, it is just a responsibility. The ultimate aim is to score runs and I am sure Virat would be thinking the same way.”

Kohli enjoyed a great winning percentage of 58.82 and won 40 matches from 68. The captaincy came to him when MS Dhoni resigned from it during the 2015 Australian tour. Since Kohli came in as the leader, the Indian think tank looked to create a strong unit of fast bowlers who could pick up 20 wickets, especially in overseas conditions. For the year 2022, India has very few test matches as the team wants to play many T20s and ODIs before the 2022 T20 World cup in Australia.
