Coach selection during Pak tour won’t be a distraction: Australia’s interim coach

Cricket Australia’s new chairman Dr. Lachlan Henderson has revealed that the new coach is likely to be announced during the Australian tour of Pakistan. The iconic tour is taking place after 24 years. Ever since the departure of Justin Langer, speculations are rife on who would be the next coach of Australia. In the meanwhile, interim coach Andrew Mcdonald has stated that coaching recruitment during the tour will not be a distraction for the team.

Very happy with whatever timelines they want to work within. It won’t become a distraction,” McDonald said. “That will just be happening in the background, our focus is firmly on the first Test in Rawalpindi and the preparation here, so we are firmly focused on that as a coaching staff.

If reports are to be believed, Mcdonald is someone who gets well along with the Australian players, so much that Pat Cummins was even heard discussing the next possible coach with him in the bar. It may not be a surprise that Mcdonald will be handed over the coaching role. Cricket Australia has earlier revealed that they are open to advice on multiple coaches and the coaching recruitment is underway.

With Covid, Bio-bubble restrictions, and mandatory quarantine, players, coaches, and officials have found it difficult to manage the balance in work-life. While Cricket Australia may be open to advise on multiple coaches, they had made it clear that they are indeed looking for a single coach to lead the team across all the formats.

George Bailey, the national selector says that the team is looking for the best person for the coaching role but it may not be necessary for the coach to be with team on every tour..

“Essentially, what you’re after is trying to find the very best person for the role, and you want to keep them in there as long as possible,” he said. “If that means that they don’t do absolutely every tour that’s fine.

Bailey said.
