If reports are believed to be true, then Shane Watson is set to join Delhi Capitals as the Assistant coach. The franchise has also roped in Ajit Agarkar as the assistant coach. It is believed that Watson was onboarded on the advice of Ricky Ponting, who is the mentor for Delhi Capitals.
It looks like many IPL franchises are leaving no stone unturned to hire the best brains for their teams and Delhi Capitals is no exception. The team has been bolstered by the purchase of David Warner, who was with the Sunrisers Hyderabad last year. The other explosive batsman in the squad are Prithvi Shaw, Rovman Powell and Mitchell Marsh.
Watson has a great record in the IPL. The all-rounder was crucial in the inaugural edition in 2008 when Rajasthan Royals won the title. He last played for Chennai Superkings in 2020 and announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket after the IPL tournament. He has been busy commentating ever since then.
The previous assistant coaches, Mohammad Kaif and Ajay Ratra have been let go by the franchise despite Delhi Capitals reaching the play offs for the last three years.
Watson is likely to mentor the batters of the team whereas Agarkar will look after the bowling department which comprises of the likes of Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur and Anrich Nortje.
Rishabh Pant will be leading the side after a stellar leadership performance in 2021 which allow Delhi Capitals to reach the play offs. The IPL 2022 is likely to get underway from the 1st week of April with the addition of two new teams, Lucknow SuperGiants and Gujarat Titans.
