The BCCI announced a few days ago that Rohit Sharma will be the next test captain. The position was vacant ever since Kohli resigned from the Test captaincy after the defeat against the South Africa. While there is no doubt that right-hander has a great mind for the game, Dinesh Karthik has some concerns about Sharma being the captain across all formats.
“He is at a place where there is a lot of cricket to be played throughout the year.” Dinesh Karthik said during Cricbuzz’s program.
Rohit Sharma currently is 34 years of age and has been ruled completely out of the overseas tour on multiple occasions due to an injury. It was in 2020 that India badly missed the services of Rohit Sharma in the ODIs and Test series when they received hammering from NewZealand. Recently, India lost not only the Test but ODI series and Rohit Sharma was not available due to his hamstring injury.
During his statement of appointing Sharma as the test captain, Chetan Sharma did mentioned about grooming young players under Sharma’s captaincy however it seems that for a couple of years, Rohit Sharma will be the captain of India in all the three formats.
India have plenty of cricket lined up this year and have an all-important T20 World cup to prove a point that they are not a bad team which was reflected of them in the 2021 T20 World cup where they were practically out of the tournament after the first two games.
Seeing his past experiences with injuries and now with more responsibility with captaincy in all three formats, Rohit Sharma will certainly need to keep a watch on his fitness as India is heavily relying on him to not only win the test series in England but to also win an ICC tournament, a trophy which India has not won after 2013, when they won the Champions Trophy under Dhoni.
