Shoaib Akhtar in a video released on his Youtube channel has claimed that his journalist friends told him that Virat Kohli will eventually resign from the Test captaincy after the SA series. And that there was a lot behind the doors that led to it. Kohli waited for 24 hours after the third test match got over and announced the decision.
“When I was in Dubai, many of my friends and journalists from India told me what exactly will happen with Virat Kohli. I was under the assumption that Kohli may not take such a big decision (Test captaincy resign) on his own. I don’t want to take the name of those friends who told me all this.”
Earlier, Sunil Gavaskar too claimed on Sports Tak that after the series loss to SA, Kohli may have got an inclination about his demotion from the Test captaincy as well, which is why he decided to step down on his own. Just like his ODI captaincy, Kohli enjoys an envious test captaincy record and won 40 test matches out of 68. He, however, failed to win the pinnacle i.e. World Test Championship in Lords this year against New Zealand.
South Africa defied the odds when they defeated India by 2 – 1. While many believe that the home side would certainly give a spirited performance, Team India was believed to have the best chance of winning their maiden test series on the South African shores. Many cricketing greats paid tribute to Kohli’s captaincy era. But many also believe that the power dynamics have certainly transitioned in Indian Cricket which was earlier in possession of Virat Kohli and Ravi Shastri.
