Virat Kohli’s sudden step down from the test captaincy shocked everyone in the cricketing fraternity. The former captain took India to great heights in the Test Cricket, the chief being taking India from no. 7 to No. 1, beating Australia in Australia (2018 – 2019), leading England by 2 -1 (the last match to be played in 2022), and reaching the final of the maiden world test championship in 2021. Speaking to Sports Tak, Indian former off-spinner, Harbhajan Singh, has backed Jasprit Bumrah to be the next test captain.
“I feel like Rohit Sharma should be the captain of all three formats if he is fit. But if Rohit doesn’t want to captain the test side, then Bumrah appears eligible for Test captaincy. We think that a batsman can be a good captain. Why can’t a bowler not be a captain? Jasprit Bumrah has won many matches for India in recent times. Jasprit Bumrah has the potential to lead India because I have seen his mindset. He is a very strong-headed guy who can lead Team India.” said Harbhajan
Harbhajan also believes that there doesn’t seem to be an alternative of Rohit Sharma in the ODIs and T20s at the moment. It was only in the last month that BCCI shocked the Indian cricket fraternity by demoting Virat Kohli from ODI captaincy. Kohli then relinquished the captaincy when lost the test series to South Africa by 2 – 1. India will now play the West Indies at home. The series will start from 6th Feb.
Virat’s sudden test captaincy retirement may have contributed to India’s ODI series whitewash : Harbhajan Singh
While South Africa was expected to bring in a solid performance in the test arena, fans believed that India will bounce back strongly in the ODI tournament. India was whitewashed by 3 -0 against a comparatively easier SA side. Speaking to Sports Tak, Harbhajan said, “The sudden news of Virat’s captaincy resignation was a big decision and the team might have been unable to soak that in quickly. But if we talk overall, then I don’t think any batsman played at par with their potential.”
