Jadeja was not the right choice for CSK captaincy, Ravi Shastri opines

There is no doubt that Ravi Shastri has always been straightforward with his opinions. After serving the Indian team for nearly 7 years, Shastri has returned to commentary and has offered a no. of straightforward opinions. After CSK’s fourth straight loss in this year’s IPL, Shastri has commented about Jadeja’s captaincy.

According to the former coach, Chennai Super Kings should have never gone with Jadeja as the captain.

“I believe, a player like Jadeja should focus on his cricket. If Chennai think about it again, they should have not let Faf du Plessis go because he is a match-winner and played a lot,” Shastri said on ESPNcricinfo show ‘T20 Time Out’.

Jadeja had a disastrous start to his IPL captaincy. The all-rounder is known for his rocket arm throw, fielding, bowling, and useful contribution in the lower order. But handing over the reigns of captaincy was eyebrow-raising for the cricketing community.

Chennai Super Kings let go of their premier batsman Faf Du Plessis in the retention. The batsman was bought by Royal Challengers Bangalore in the recent auction and was handed over the captaincy as Kohli had already announced his decision last year to step down from it. Du Plessis has made a great start with RCB as the franchise has secured three wins from the first four matches.

Du Plessis could have been the right choice for captaincy, feels Shastri

Shastri believes that someone like Du Plessis could have been the right man to lead CSK apart in the absence of Dhoni. The commentator believes that Jadeja offers his best when he is under pressure such as that of captaincy.

“If Dhoni didn’t want to captain the side, then Faf should have become the captain and Jadeja should have played as a player. Because he (Jadeja) can then play freely, no pressure of captaincy,” Shastri added.

Dhoni stepped down from the captaincy just days ago before the start of the tournament. There are rumors in the cricketing fraternity that this could be the last IPL of Dhoni, under whom the franchise had won four titles till now.
