Lack of smart cricket and poor shots cost us the series: Rahul Dravid

Speaking in the post-match press conference, Dravid pointed out that lack of smart cricket and poor cricketing shots cost the ODI series for India. Apart from the Centurion test, nothing has gone well for the touring side as they not only suffered a 2 – 1 loss in the test but also lost the ODI series by 3 – 0.

India was made to chase down the score in two ODIs. “Even South Africa, who batted first on two occasions got only 290 as well, you know 290 and 280. If I would have thought back by the 30th over, both those games should have actually chased them down. But we didn’t because we played some poor shots and we didn’t play some smart cricket at critical situations.”

It has been ages since India lost an ODI series by a whitewash. There is no doubt that the South African team is in the transition phase at the moment and many would not have given them a chance to survive against the Indian team on this tour. South Africa is the only shore where India has not won a test series so far.

India was mainly exposed to their middle-order, a woe that has not been resolved for many years, which even cost the semi-finals in 2019. On this ODI tour too, India was provided a decent start by the top three batsmen but the middle order was unable to capitalize on the opportunity.

India will now play a home series of T20s and ODIs against the West Indies starting from 6th February. Rohit Sharma is expected to take part in the series after recovering from the hamstring which saw him left out of the SA tour.
