Langer contract renewal chances dimmed after meeting – Sources

Reports from leading publications have emerged following a meeting between coach Langer and CA officials and they aren’t looking bright for Justin Langer. News has it that the coach is in no mood to accept anything less than a full-time contract and that CA officials have hinted that the coach may have to reapply for the position.

Langer is in charge of the coaching till May 2022. The year 2021 did not started well for Australia as they lost the decider match at their Gabba fortress against a formidable but depleted Indian side . What followed was the emergence of reports that several players were not happy with the micro-management style and high-pressure environment of Langer.

While Australia dramatically turned around their performance in the later part of the year, according to sources, the key people involved in the overhauling the team environment were the assistant coach Andrew McDonald and Michael Di Venuto and not Langer and therefore, the sentiment is that the further Langer stays away from the team, the better it performs.

The main concern may not lie with the reappointment of Langer as a coach but rather with the departure of the assistant coaches, who may look elsewhere if Langer will be back in charge. There were speculations earlier that Langer refused to tour Pakistan if he was offered anything less than his expectations, however the stance seems to have changed.

Meanwhile Australia are gearing to tour Pakistan after 28 years. The series will start from the 3rd of March.
