Not in favor of fast bowler becoming a test captain : Ravi Shastri

The Indian team think tank management are pondering who to appoint the next test captain after Kohli’s shocking relinquishing of it upon losing the test series against SA. Many names have cropped up including of Rishabh Pant, K L Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah and Rohit Sharma too is in the contender. Now Ravi Shastri has given his opinion whether a fast bowler could captain the test format for India.

While talking to Ravi Shastri on his Youtube channel, Shoaib Akhtar suggested whether the likes of Bumrah can be made the test captain of India, to which Shastri replied, “I never thought about it. In India, we had enough. And I never thought in that fashion. In India it is going to be difficult for a fast bowler to be the captain.”

If we look at cricketing history, most of the captains in the world have been batsman. Fast bowling consumes plenty of energy and therefore makes captaincy extremely difficult. This does not mean that fast bowlers cannot be a good captains however the likes of Kapil Dev and Imran Khan were not only fast but were genuine all-rounders.

Exceptions can be there. Australia suffered a major blow when their Test captain Tim Paine was caught in a major sexting scandal. Pat Cummins was appointed the test captain and he grabbed it with both hands as Australia humiliated England by 4 – 0.

“I think a fast bowler captain needs to be an all-rounder or he has to be a Bob Willis kind of captain. In conditions where the play, a fast bowler will always be in the game, he will be aggressive, he will be looking to win games and take wickets. But very rarely, a fast bowler has been there for too long unless he is a genuine all-rounder like Kapil Dev or Imran Khan or Sir Gary Sobers.” Shastri said.
