After a disastrous tour of South Africa, India will look to restore its pride in the home series against West Indies which will commence from the 6th of February. There have been reports about R.Ashwin’s niggle for which he will be rested. Ashwin is believed to have played the SA ODI series after taking injections which is why he will be rested for the Windies series.
There is also the speculations that the off-spinner is not in the scheme of selection for the coming series even if he was fully fit. Ravichandran Ashwin returned to the white-ball format in the T20 World Cup but did not make a huge impact in the recently concluded ODI series against SA. India may go with Washington Sundar in place of Ashwin for the Windies home series.
Rohit Sharma is expected to lead the side after missing the SA series due to his left hamstring injury. This will be Sharma’s first assignment after being appointed as the permanent captain of the ODI team in December 2021.
Jasprit Bumrah will be rested after a strenuous bowling performance, whereas Bhuwaneshwar Kumar may not get a chance after a dismal performance in the SA ODI series where cricket fans noticed a substantial lack of pace and movement from his usual performance. Deepak Chahar and Shardul Thakur may be opted in place of him. Ravindra Jadeja is on the road to recovery from his right-forearm injury and therefore will miss the Windies home series.
The Indian think tank is likely to rely on Shreyas Iyer, Venkatesh Iyer, and Rishabh Pant in the middle order. The trio has been at the center of criticism for not bailing out India on multiple occasions in the SA ODI series where India was whitewashed by a relatively inexperienced South African side. The squad for the West Indies series is likely to be announced on the 26th of January. After the West Indies series, the Indian team will host Sri Lanka for 2 tests and 3 T20s from the 24th of February.
