There is no doubt that PSL has grown over the years. The tournament attracts the best of talents from all across the world. However, owing to the popularity, market size and purse value that is being offered to players in the IPL, players over the years have preferred IPL, sometimes more than their home series.
Now at the helm of the PCB affairs, Ramiz Raja, the former cricket commentator, and analyst has given a bold statement. Over the years the PSL has chosen players on their draft systems.
According to the PCB chairman, if the PSL adopts the auction model, then it is unlikely that players would prefer the IPL over PSL. The chairman has hinted that the current auction-based system is likely to be scrapped from next year and that the market atmosphere is conducive for the auction model.
“This is a game of money. When the cricket economy grows in Pakistan, our respect will rise. The main driver of that financial economy is the PSL. If we take the PSL to auction model, increase the purse, then I’ll put it in the IPL bracket. And then we’ll see who goes to play the IPL over the PSL” Ramiz Raja as quoted by Espncricinfo
The PSL started in the year 2016 and has seen seven editions till now. This year’s title was won by Shaheen Shah Afridi led Lahore Qalandars whereas the IPL made inception in 2008 and revolutionize T20 cricket.
