Ravichandran Ashwin is on a roll, adds this unique record to his name

There is no doubt that Ravichandran Ashwin has been India’s consistent performer over the years. The bowler has rattled the oppositions on a number of occasions and his ability to read the batsmen’s minds has been applauded by both critics and former players.

A few days ago during the 2nd test match with Sri Lanka, the off-spinner surpassed Kapil Dev and Dale Steyn in the number of wickets tally. But there was one more record that the veteran spinner has added in his career.

Ashwin has become the first bowler to amass 100 wickets in the World Test championship cycle. He achieved this feat in 21 test matches. Ashwin was instrumental in the wins that India achieved during the England home series where he and Axar Patel bamboozled the oppositions with straighter ones and conventional off-spin deliveries. Below is the list of bowlers who have taken no. of wickets so far in the WTC cycle in descending order.

100-Ravichandran Ashwin, 93- Pat Cummins, 83- Stuart Broad, 80- Tim Southee, 75- Nathan Lyon, 74- Jasprit Bumrah, 70- Mohammed Shami, 68- Shaheen Shah Afridi, 68- Kagiso Rabada, 66- Mitchell Starc

Ashwin wasn’t in the playing eleven for the first four test matches in England in 2021

During the England tour, critics and cricketing pundits believed that Ashwin would play a key role in England’s tracks, especially in the last days. However, to the surprise of many, Ashwin wasn’t picked in the first four test matches. This raised the suspicion that all is not well between then captain Virat Kohli and veteran spinner. There were also reports Ashwin made a complaint of Kohli for making the seniors feel insecure after India lost the WTC final. However, the veteran off-spinner has time and again denied such rumors. But had Ashwin played all the test matches, he would have achieved this feat a lot earlier.
