South Africa defeated India in the first ODI at Paarl. The home side put on 296 runs with the help of centurions Temba Bavuma (ODI captain) and Rassie Van Der Dussen. India were 160 for 2 at a time and looked that they had the chase under control until the familiar batting collapse occurred and the home side lost the game by 31 runs.
Speaking to the Star Sports Network, Sanjay Bangar, the former batting coach heaped praises on Kohli and Dhawan for their 92 run partnership however, they emphasized that the Indian middle-order needs to take responsibility whenever the team loses their top order quickly.
India collapsed from 183 for three to 186 for six. Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer, and Venkatesh Iyer got out cheaply after scoring 16,17, and 2 runs.
The middle-order has been the concern for India for a no. of years. In the 2019 semis, India was never able to recover when they lost Sharma, Rahul, and Kohli within just 20 minutes of play. During the 2021 T20 World Cup, India lost Rohit Sharma, and K L Rahul against Pakistan and was able to put up only 151 runs.
The second ODI match will be held on 21st January at Boland Park, Paarl from 1.20 p.m. IST
